Support for carers

If you look after someone, please tell us. We may be able to make things easier for you.

Caring should not come at the cost of your own health. Tell us how your caring role is affecting you, and what support you need.

What we can offer carers

  • phone appointments, if you cannot leave the person you care for or bring them with you
  • flexibility or priority on appointment times, where we can
  • somewhere for the person you care for to wait, so you can have your appointment in private
  • ordering prescriptions by phone, where we can
  • an annual health check and a flu jab
  • information about local carers services, which may arrange transport or sitting services so you can come to the surgery
  • information about your right to a carer’s assessment of your own needs
  • a conversation about what you would like us to do if the person you care for has a medical emergency

How we will treat you

  • we will respect your privacy, and have personal conversations somewhere private
  • we will listen to what you tell us about your caring role and the needs of the person you care for
  • if they agree to us sharing it, we will tell you about the condition and needs of the person you care for
  • that includes the effects of their medicine
  • we will give you general information about health conditions if we do not have their consent to share their own information
  • we will talk to patients about the benefits of sharing information with someone who cares for them

We will not assume how much care you want to take on.
