Mental health
Talking therapies
Talking therapies help people over 16 with problems such as stress, anxiety and depression. NHS practitioners deliver them, and they are confidential.

Mental health support for children and young people
CAMHS supports children and young people up to 18 with moderate to severe mental health problems. They also assess for autism and ADHD where there is enough evidence from parents and schools.
Parents and health professionals can make a referral.

If you are in a mental health crisis
Call 111 and choose option 2 for mental health. It is free and open 24 hours a day.
If you are deaf or have hearing loss, use NHS 111 SignVideo or the Relay UK app on 18001 111.
Free listening services
Trained volunteers will listen to anything that is troubling you, in confidence:
- Samaritans – call 116 123, or email jo@samaritans.org for a reply within 24 hours
- Shout – text SHOUT to 85258. Text YM instead if you are under 19
- Childline – call 0800 1111 if you are under 19. The number will not show on your phone bill
These services only share your information if they are very worried about you.
Physiotherapy
If you are over 17 and have a muscle, bone or joint problem, you can refer yourself for treatment.
Refer yourself to YourPhysio, the NHS physiotherapy service for the Vale of York. Their website also has advice on managing pain and injuries yourself.
If a muscle, bone or joint problem is affecting your work, a specialist physiotherapist can help you stay in work or return to it. Ask a clinician about the Work and Health service, or refer yourself through YourPhysio.
Maternity care
Local midwives work for York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals. You may see them at the surgery, but we do not book their appointments.
Refer your pregnancy to York and Scarborough maternity services.
Your maternity record is held on a system called Badgernet.

Sexual health
YorSexual Health offers free, confidential advice, contraception and testing in York and North Yorkshire.

Stopping smoking
Local stop smoking services are free. Advisers support you through the first few months after you stop.

Weight management
Community pharmacies in Humber and North Yorkshire run an NHS weight management service. It can include tirzepatide (Mounjaro).
To be eligible, all of these must apply:
- you are 18 or over
- your body mass index is 40 or more. It is 37.5 or more if you are of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background
- you have four of these five conditions: cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes
You also need to agree to:
- let the service see your medical record
- travel to your first appointment
- bring identification to your first appointment
- commit to a 9-month treatment plan, which includes advice on lifestyle, diet and exercise

Nutrition advice
Read nutrition advice for patients. It covers weight management, eating disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition after bariatric surgery and nutritional deficiencies.
Pharmacy First
A pharmacist can treat some conditions without you seeing a GP, including urine infections, tonsillitis, shingles and infected insect bites.
